Palf Bokeh
A depth-of-field defocus effect with aperture, highlight and depth-map controls.
Installation
- 01
Copy the Palf Bokeh plug-in from the distribution into the After Effects Plug-ins folder.

Restart After Effects and apply Palf Bokeh from the Effect menu.
Basic operation
Set the defocus with Blur Amount, build the aperture under Iris, and adjust Highlights and Camera Focus as needed. Use a lower quality while previewing and switch to High or Ultra for final output.
Iris
- Iris Type
- Choose Circle, Polygonal or Custom aperture geometry.
- Iris Angle / Iris Aspect
- Adjust aperture rotation and aspect ratio.
- Polygonal Sides / Polygonal Curvature
- Set polygon side count and curvature.
- Custom Iris / Iris Channel / Iris Fit
- Select the custom aperture layer, source channel and fitting method.
- Iris Threshold / Iris Softness / Iris Gamma
- Control extraction and edge treatment of the custom aperture image.
Camera Focus / Zone Control
- Depth Map Layer / Map Channel
- Select the depth map and channel used for focus control.
- Invert Map
- Reverses near and far depth values.
- Focus Point / Focus Distance
- Set the focus distance from an image point or a numeric value.
- Zone Width / Zone Offset
- Adjust the width and position of the in-focus zone.
- Near Blur Factor / Far Blur Factor / Near Falloff / Far Falloff
- Control blur strength and transition independently in front of and behind focus.
Quality and output
- Quality
- Choose Preview, Balanced, High or Ultra sampling quality.
- Edge Behaviour
- Controls sampling beyond the image edge.
- Alpha Mode / Expand Output
- Set alpha handling and whether the output bounds expand.
